Perched Pointers: Moving Organization

Perched has developed the ultimate “to do” list for moving.  From that list, here are 6 tips for getting organized:

  1. Review credit card and bank statements for a 3-month period to develop a list for change-of-address notifications.  Don’t forget food delivery (GrubHub), grocery delivery (FreshDirect), and online shopping (Amazon).

  2. If you are moving into or out of a building (as opposed to a single-family home), you probably need your super’s (or someone’s) advance approval for your moving date/time. Get building clearance as soon as you can – you’ve also got to coordinate the date with the movers.

  3. Avoid scheduling movers at the same time as donation pick-ups or junk removal.

  4. Avoid scheduling the move on the same day of the closing.

  5. It’s a lot to juggle. If possible, have the new home cleaned and painted before you move in.  Be sure extra paint is left behind to touch up the dings from the move.

  6. Schedule recycling pick-up for cardboard boxes the day after the move.  Getting them GONE can really speed the process of setting up – the FUN part!

BONUS TIP FOR RENOVATORS: If renovating your new kitchen, establish a temporary kitchen in advance of moving day.  Suggested contents:  microwave, toaster, coffee maker, individually-wrapped snacks, dish soap and brush, paper plates and utensils.
